The Internet can go far beyond World Wide Web Sites. Frequently I develop large Internet-based computer systems to assist a company in some way with running or managing part or all of its business, where the Internet forms the ideal platform for that system's development.
For instance, this might be a central web database for remote salespersons to log into and track their appointments. Or it could be a central accounting system, or an accommodation reservation database, or even an Extranet. It might be an event delegate management system, or a statistical reporting application, or a stock and order management program.
Developing and running software using the Internet creates many possibilities previously unavailable with traditional custom-made computer programs. They are no longer limited to just running in the office. Staff (and customers or associates) can log in from any computer in the world and participate - seeing live data and working in real time. And software development with the Internet and the web is typically faster (and therefore cheaper).
